Why battery-containing products need attention now
Many sellers treat battery rules as a concern only for companies selling standalone batteries. That is too narrow. If a product contains or is supplied with a battery, the product team still needs to check whether the EU battery framework affects design, documentation, labelling, extended producer responsibility, and platform evidence.
Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 entered into force in 2023 and replaced the older Battery Directive. It covers multiple battery categories, including portable batteries, industrial batteries, electric vehicle batteries and light means of transport batteries.
Key 2026 and 2027 preparation points
For portable batteries incorporated into appliances, sellers should review the removable and replaceable design requirement before the 18 February 2027 application date. The practical question is whether the user, or an independent professional where allowed, can remove and replace the battery without damaging the product.
For connected compliance work, teams should also prepare data fields for the battery passport route. A practical ledger can include battery category, model, manufacturer details, production information, material composition, carbon footprint data where applicable, recycled content data where applicable, safety information, durability parameters, and dismantling or recycling information.
How sellers can prepare evidence
1. Classify the product and battery type. Bluetooth earphones, power banks, smart watches, robot cleaners, power tools, electric scooters and energy storage products may fall into different battery categories. Classification affects which documents and design checks are needed.
2. Review the physical design. Check adhesive sealing, welded connections, battery compartment access, spare-part logic, and whether instructions support a compliant replacement process.
3. Build a battery data ledger. Collect supplier declarations, bill of materials data, battery model details, safety reports, carbon footprint or life-cycle information where applicable, and EPR registration evidence for relevant EU markets.
4. Connect platform evidence with regulatory evidence. Marketplace submissions often ask for concise evidence. Keep the evidence package traceable so the same source documents can support internal review, buyer requests and platform checks.

Before updating a listing or launching a new battery-containing SKU in the EU, confirm the battery classification, review removability, check supplier documentation, prepare EPR registration evidence where relevant, and map which passport or data fields may be required later.
