Amazon's Climate Pledge Friendly (CPF) program highlights sustainable products with a green badge on search results and product detail pages. For Amazon sellers, earning this badge can improve product visibility and customer trust.

Yet many sellers are surprised when their CPF application gets rejected — even though they have valid GRS or FSC certificates. The problem? Their BOM (Bill of Materials) calculation is wrong.

"Certified material percentage below threshold" is among the top 3 reasons for CPF rejection. And more often than not, the material is actually there — the calculation method is just wrong.

Your BOM is the foundation for calculating the percentage of certified material in your product. What counts, what doesn't, and how you measure it — these details determine whether your product meets CPF's 50% threshold.

5 Common BOM Calculation Mistakes

Mistake 1: Only counting the main material

This is the most common mistake. Many sellers calculate recycled content percentage using only the main material — the fabric of a backpack, the body of a storage box, the textile of a T-shirt. They divide the main material weight by itself and get "100% recycled."

But CPF requires the percentage of the entire product, not just the main material.

The core problem: You think "80% recycled" means 80% of the main material. Amazon calculates it as certified material weight ÷ total product weight. The numerator and denominator are completely different.

Example:

  • Recycled polyester backpack: 100% GRS-certified recycled polyester fabric, 400g
  • Accessories (zipper, hardware buckles, webbing, lining, labels): 150g total, non-recycled
  • Your calculation: 400g ÷ 400g = 100%
  • Actual calculation: 400g ÷ (400g + 150g) = 72.7%

In this example, 72.7% still passes the 50% threshold. But what about more complex products? Electronics with recycled plastic casings but non-recycled circuit boards, batteries, and screws. Shoes with recycled uppers but non-recycled soles, laces, and eyelets. The percentage can drop well below 50%.

Correct approach: Your BOM must list all components of the product. Weigh each one, then calculate the total weight of certified material as a percentage of total product weight.

Mistake 2: Calculating by count, not by weight

The second common mistake is calculating percentage by number of components, volume, or area — instead of weight.

For example, a plastic storage box has a recycled plastic body (1 component) and a regular plastic seal ring (1 component). Some sellers say "1 out of 2 components is recycled, so 50% recycled." This is wrong.

Aha moment: Certified material percentage is calculated by weight, not by count, volume, or area. One heavy main material can equal the weight of 100 small accessories.

Example:

  • Recycled plastic storage box: body 200g (recycled), seal ring 5g (regular)
  • By count: 1 out of 2 components → 50%
  • By weight: 200g ÷ (200g + 5g) = 97.6%

In this example, calculating by weight actually gives a higher percentage. But the reverse is also common. A recycled cotton T-shirt with 200g of recycled fabric but 20 small non-recycled accessories weighing only 10g total: by count it's "1 out of 21 = 5%", but by weight it's 95%.

Correct approach: All percentage calculations must be based on weight, with the unit consistently in grams (g).

Mistake 3: Unclear packaging boundaries

The third mistake is uncertainty about whether packaging (plastic bags, cardboard boxes, hang tags) should be included in the total weight.

The answer depends on your certification:

  1. If your claim is "product made from X% recycled material" — typically only the product itself counts, not packaging
  2. If your claim is "product and packaging are both recycled" — packaging must be included
  3. For CPF: Most certifications (GRS, GreenCircle, etc.) cover the product itself. Packaging is usually excluded from the certified material percentage
Important note: GreenCircle Recycled Content certification explicitly states it "excludes packaging." If you're using GreenCircle, packaging absolutely cannot be counted.

Common pitfall: Some sellers add packaging to both numerator and denominator to "boost the percentage," assuming "adding more can't hurt." But if your certification doesn't cover packaging, including it can actually dilute the percentage — because packaging is usually not certified material.

Correct approach:

  1. Confirm whether your certification covers packaging
  2. If not, clearly separate "product body" and "packaging materials" in your BOM
  3. Calculate percentage only for the scope covered by the certification
  4. Ensure your listing claim wording matches the certification scope

Mistake 4: Mishandling production waste

The fourth mistake is treating total purchased certified material as equal to the certified material in the finished product, ignoring production waste.

Example:

  • You purchase 100kg of GRS-certified recycled polyester fabric
  • After production, you get 85kg of finished product (15kg cutting waste)
  • Wrong assumption: "I used 100kg of recycled material, so the product is 100% recycled"
  • Correct understanding: CPF looks at certified material percentage in the finished product, not how much you purchased

Key distinction:

  • Wasted material is still certified material — but it's not in the finished product
  • Waste rate doesn't change the percentage itself (same material, both numerator and denominator decrease proportionally)
  • Waste rate affects TC certificate quantity matching: 100kg of certified fabric corresponds to 85kg of finished product, not 100kg

Correct approach:

  1. Only count material weight in the finished product in your BOM
  2. Match TC certificate quantities to actual shipment volume (accounting for waste rate)
  3. If wasted certified material is recycled and reused, separate traceability documentation is required

Mistake 5: Sharing one BOM across multiple ASINs

The fifth mistake involves product variations. Many sellers have multiple ASINs — different colors, sizes, styles — but use the same BOM for all of them, claiming "60% recycled material."

But different variations can have very different material percentages:

  • Larger products may have more complex structures with more non-certified parts, lowering the percentage
  • Different color fabrics may come from different batches with different certification status
  • Different styles can have very different accessories, causing significant percentage variation
Why this matters: Amazon CPF reviews by ASIN. If 3 out of 10 ASINs fall below 50%, those 3 get rejected — even if the other 7 pass. Worse: if an ASIN that doesn't meet the threshold is submitted using an "average percentage" from a shared BOM, it could be considered a false claim.

Correct approach:

  1. Each ASIN needs its own BOM and its own percentage calculation
  2. Similar ASINs can share a BOM template, but actual data must be verified item by item
  3. For multi-variation products, test the SKU with the lowest expected percentage first — if the lowest one passes, the others probably will too
  4. Maintain an ASIN-BOM mapping table, recording the BOM version for each ASIN
