Why sellers should start with data mapping
The ESPR creates an ecodesign framework for product lifecycle information. Digital Product Passport obligations will be introduced through product-specific measures. For brands, manufacturers, and cross-border sellers, the practical first step is not a broad sustainability statement. It is a structured file that connects SKU scope, material data, repairability information, supplier evidence, recycled-content claims, and listing-page wording.
Four tables to prepare
- Product scope: SKU, model, use case, EU sales country, and possible product group.
- Data fields: materials, components, suppliers, repair information, recycling or recycled-content evidence.
- Evidence source: test report, supplier declaration, purchase record, technical file, or internal document.
- Page wording: every sustainability statement on packaging, listing pages, or product detail pages mapped to the supporting evidence.
Boundary notes
If a product-specific delegated act is not yet applicable, do not present DPP completion as a finished compliance result. If recycled-content or sustainability wording is used, avoid unsupported percentages or absolute claims. A safer workflow is to keep the evidence source, product scope, and update responsibility visible before customer-facing claims are finalized.
