One workspace can help, one table can confuse
PPWR and CBAM are both part of the EU's broader sustainability and climate policy environment, so it is reasonable for a company to manage them in one EU compliance workspace. The danger starts when the team merges them into one 'green compliance' table. PPWR is packaging-focused. CBAM is focused on embedded emissions in selected imported goods. The evidence, owner and customer question are different.
If the two tracks are mixed, the company may answer a packaging question with carbon data or answer a CBAM question with a packaging-material declaration. Both responses can look active while failing to address the customer's real need.
A better folder structure
The first layer should be the product and market layer: SKU, ASIN or model, EU customer, importer, sales country and channel. The second layer should be PPWR: packaging layers, materials, weights, suppliers, artwork versions, labels and packaging claims. The third layer should be CBAM: CN code, product scope, facility, process, production period, energy data, embedded-emissions calculation and customer questionnaire status.
A fourth layer should hold customer communication. Each question should show source, answer, evidence file, owner, date and unresolved boundary. This prevents the team from sending a general sustainability pack when the customer asked a specific import or packaging question.
How to run the annual review
Review the workspace when a new SKU is launched, packaging changes, a supplier changes, a production facility changes, a CN code changes, an EU customer changes or a new questionnaire arrives. PPWR and CBAM are not one-time files; they are version-controlled evidence systems.
Greenark Certification can help set up the two-track file and review customer-facing answers. The service is evidence organisation and claim-boundary support, not an official conclusion on regulatory acceptance, customs treatment, tax outcome or platform result.
| Track | Store here | Do not mix with |
|---|---|---|
| PPWR | Packaging layer, material, label, packaging claim | Facility emissions calculation |
| CBAM | CN code, facility, process, embedded emissions | Packaging recyclability slogan |
| Customer answers | Question, evidence, owner, date, boundary | Unsupported outcome promises |
