What Is RCS Certification? A Recycled Claim Needs Material Scope and Chain Evidence

RCS focuses the claim on recycled input

The Recycled Claim Standard is used to verify recycled input and chain-of-custody handling. It is often relevant when a seller wants to support a simpler recycled-material statement. Compared with broader programs, RCS is usually discussed for the recycled-content chain rather than for a wide set of environmental or social attributes.

For website and Amazon wording, this matters. A product supported by RCS evidence should not automatically be described as broadly eco-friendly, fully sustainable or environmentally superior. The wording should stay close to the verified material fact.

Example: one component versus the whole product

If a backpack has recycled polyester fabric but conventional zippers, foam and lining, the claim should say what part is supported. If the evidence only covers fabric purchased for one production run, the seller should avoid applying the same statement to every future version without checking updates.

RCS evidence is strongest when certificate scope, transaction records, material composition and SKU mapping are reviewed together. A standalone certificate screenshot is rarely enough for a careful claim review.

Where RCS fits in a CPF discussion

RCS may be one possible pathway for a recycled claim, but the seller still needs to check Amazon's current recognition rules and product-level evidence requirements. The product page should make a narrow, document-backed statement.
