What Is FSC Certification? Paper, Wood, Packaging and Hangtags Need Separate Review

FSC claims depend on what the claim is attached to

FSC is frequently discussed for paper packaging, hangtags, manuals, wood products and paper-based components. The practical challenge is that a document may support one part of a product presentation but not another. A carton claim is not automatically a product claim. A hangtag claim is not automatically evidence for the item being sold.

This distinction becomes important on a marketplace page because shoppers see the product image, packaging text and marketing description together. If the page simply says a product is FSC certified, the reader may understand more than the evidence supports.

Example: cardboard box for a non-paper product

A seller may ship an electronic accessory in a paper box with FSC-related documentation. That can be relevant to packaging language, but it should not be converted into a claim that the electronic accessory itself is FSC certified. The team should check the chain-of-custody certificate, supplier invoice, label approval or claim wording and packaging artwork.

If the product itself contains wood, bamboo, paper or other forest-based material, the product-level evidence needs its own review. Different suppliers and different packaging versions can change the claim boundary.

How to organize the file

A useful file identifies the certificate holder, certificate validity, product group, invoice claim, label artwork, package version, SKU and listing wording. Updates to supplier, packaging artwork or product composition should trigger another review.
