GRS is more than a recycled-material label

The Global Recycled Standard is commonly discussed when a product contains recycled polyester, recycled nylon, recycled plastic, recycled cotton or another recycled input. For customer-facing claims, the key issue is not only whether a supplier has a GRS certificate. The seller needs to know what the certificate covers and whether the material or product being sold is connected to the documented transaction chain.

A GRS certificate may cover a factory, a process, a product category or a material route. A transaction certificate can help connect a certified supply-chain movement to a batch or order. Without that connection, a product page can easily overstate the evidence.

Example: recycled polyester bag

For a bag described as using recycled polyester fabric, the team should identify the fabric supplier, certificate scope, order documents, transaction certificate, composition label and final SKU. If only a lining uses recycled polyester, the claim should not read as though the whole bag is recycled. If one colorway changes supplier, that variation may need separate review.

GRS also includes broader chain-of-custody and processing requirements. This is why the evidence package should include more than a screenshot of a supplier certificate. It should show how the material moves from input to finished product.

What Greenark reviews before a page claim

A practical review checks the certificate holder, product category, material percentage, transaction document, batch mapping, product photos and listing wording. The claim should be specific enough for a buyer or platform reviewer to understand what is actually recycled.

Greenark Certification can assist with document sorting and claim-boundary review. It does not promise marketplace display, approval, ranking, sales results or certification outcome.
