For most battery-containing products, the first step is not to claim battery-passport readiness. It is to map the battery model, supplier evidence and public claims to the same SKU.

Data review date: 2026-08-10. This article is based on Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 as published on EUR-Lex. The regulation addresses batteries and waste batteries across the lifecycle, including sustainability, safety, labelling, information and waste-management obligations. This article is not legal advice and does not promise platform, regulatory, certification, ranking, traffic or sales outcomes.

Many product teams compress the EU Battery Regulation into one phrase: battery passport. That is not sufficient. The regulation first requires a category and market-role analysis. A headset, toy, lamp, energy-storage unit or electric scooter may need its internal battery treated as a separate evidence object, not merely as part of the finished product.

Start with a SKU-to-battery map. Identify the finished-product SKU, battery model, capacity, chemistry, supplier, battery category, market role and sales country. Then connect reports, supplier declarations, labels, recovery information and page claims to that same row.

Do not turn field preparation into a public claim

Battery passport fields can be prepared early, but preparation is not the same as a completed passport. Keep three columns: confirmed, pending supplier confirmation and not currently applicable or pending legal detail. Every confirmed field should point to a report, bill of materials, supplier declaration or manufacturing record.

Substance evidence also needs model and batch boundaries. A generic supplier statement is not enough if the cell, pack, enclosure or supplier changes. The same applies to listing wording such as recyclable, sustainable, recycled content or low carbon.

Operational split

  • Purchasing collects supplier model, specification, declaration, report and change records.
  • Engineering and quality connect finished SKU, battery model, structure and batch.
  • Operations export listings, packaging, manuals and back-end category screenshots.
  • Compliance or management decides what can remain public and what must be paused.
