US FCC-ID Certification

The US FCC-ID certification is a mandatory certification identifier required by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for radio frequency (RF) emitting devices. It demonstrates that a device complies with U.S. RF technical specifications and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements, ensuring it does not cause harmful interference to other radio equipment. It is a statutory prerequisite for wireless devices entering the U.S. market.

I. Core Purpose

The FCC-ID is a unique identifier (formatted as "Grantee Code + Product Code," e.g., 2ABT2-XXXX) assigned to a device upon passing FCC certification. It must be permanently affixed to the product or its packaging, enabling the FCC to trace device compliance. It also serves as an essential credential for customs clearance and market sales.

II. Scope of Application

FCC-ID certification primarily applies to devices that actively emit radio waves:

  • Wireless Communication Devices: mobile phones, two-way radios, base stations, satellite phones
  • Short-Range Wireless Devices: Bluetooth devices (earbuds, speakers), Wi-Fi routers, ZigBee modules
  • Others: RFID devices, drones, wireless remote controllers, microwave ovens (certain frequency bands), etc.

III. Certification Process

  1. Select certification type: Confirm the device falls under the category requiring FCC-ID certification for wireless transmitting equipment
  2. Prepare for testing: Provide product technical documentation (circuit schematics, PCB layout, user manual, bill of materials, etc.)
  3. Laboratory testing: Commission an FCC-recognized third-party laboratory to conduct RF performance and electromagnetic radiation testing in accordance with applicable standards (e.g., Part 15, Part 22, Part 90, etc.)
  4. Submit for review: Submit the test report, product information, and other required documents through an FCC-authorized TCB (Telecommunication Certification Body). Upon approval, a unique FCC-ID is assigned
  5. Labeling and compliance: Permanently affix the FCC-ID to the product body or packaging; retain certification documents for customs or market surveillance inspections

IV. Key Considerations

  • Certification type distinction: FCC certification is divided into three categories; only "ID Certification" requires TCB review and issuance of an FCC-ID
  • Testing standards: Different devices correspond to different FCC rule parts (e.g., Part 15 for consumer low-power devices, Part 24 for cellular mobile devices)
  • Validity period: The FCC-ID has no fixed expiration date, but re-certification is required when the product design changes or FCC standards are updated
  • Compliance risks: Wireless devices entering the U.S. market without an FCC-ID may face customs detention, fines, or market prohibition

Summary

FCC-ID certification is the "passport" for wireless devices entering the U.S. market.
